Macaroni Upma

It is fairly difficult, if not impossible, to find whole wheat macaroni where I live. The commonly available brands use refined flour. Imagine my delight, therefore, when I found a store offering this very rare product – whole wheat macaroni. As a child, I have had a lot of macaroni prepared in a South Indian way. I therefore asked Hari to prepare me a breakfast that is exactly similar to the way have had it as a child. And it tasted wonderful. Also very easy to prepare.
Free movement of vegetables is still fairly restricted due to the pandemic. I therefore used whatever was available in my home to prepare this dish. But you can use any vegetables of your choice.

Ingredients
150 gms whole wheat macaroni
1 medium sized onion, sliced
1 small green bell pepper, sliced
1/2 cup French beans, chopped fine
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp mustard seeds (sarson, kadugu)
1/2 tsp split black lentils (urad dal, ulutham parupu)
Salt to taste
Method
Boil a bowl of water till it comes to a rolling boil
Add the macaroni and boil for 5 minutes or till it is soft
Strain and set aside
Heat a wok and add mustard seeds
When they begin to splutter, add the lentils
When the lentils turn golden brown, add the vegetables
And a little water and cook for about 5 minutes or till the vegetables are done
Add the macaroni
Add the chilli powder and salt
Mix well
Serve hot
Enjoy!
