Though Thiruvadrai is long gone, I thought of completing my posts on this festival. Here is the last one – a delicious curry make of greater yam and broad beans. This is a typical Palakkad preprartion made on Thiruvadirai day. Though a very simple preparation, the taste will leave you spellbound. I often regret that I do not get greater yam oftener in Delhi/NCR so that I am able to savour this wonderful dish often. But I should thank my lucky stars that I get the vegetable at all – and be thankful for small mercies.
Ingredients
1/2 kg greater yam (mitti ka aloo, kavathu)
1/2 kg broad beans (sem phali, avarakkai)
1/4 kg coconut, grated
4-5 green chillies
1 tsp turmeric powder (haldi, manjal podi)
1 sprig curry leaves
Salt to taste
Method
Wash, peel and cut the greater yam into 1″ slices
Cut the broad beans into long pieces
Heat a heavy bottom vessel and add the vegetables to it
Add turmeric powder, salt and a little water
Cook till the greater yam is tender
Grate coconut curry
Add this to the curry
Add curry leaves
Mix well and remove from flame
Serve hot with Thiruvadiri kali or even with red/brown rice or Indian breads
Enjoy!
